Closing the Border a Matter of National Security

(Oshkosh, WI) – State Sen. Glenn Grothman, Republican candidate for Congress, emphasized today that closing down the border and reforming the immigration system in America is a matter of national security. Grothman (R – Campbellsport) released a five-point plan for addressing the immigration crisis on the southern border.

“America is a land of immigrants, and there’s a good reason for that. We’re the most free, the most prosperous nation in the world and people all over the world want to be here,” said Grothman. “Unfortunately, enemies of freedom and prosperity want do harm to our country, and that’s why we need a carefully controlled immigration system to properly screen and examine those that want to come here.”

On solving the near-term immigration crisis, Grothman emphasized closing down the border, but said Republicans need to be held accountable because in the past they’ve failed to do as they’ve promised.

“First and foremost, we need to close down the border, but in the past, even Republicans, including President Bush, have lost their way on this critical issue of national security,” said Grothman. “I’ve shown again and again that I’m willing to take on the weak-kneed politicians that make promises to get elected but turn their backs on their constituents. When I get to Congress, I’ll hold Republicans’ feet to the fire and tirelessly fight to shut down the border.”

Grothman’s plan to stem the tide of illegal immigration also hinges on reforming welfare.

“I’ve heard anecdotally that there are advertisements for American welfare programs in Mexico and other Central American countries, and I can believe it because the welfare programs in America are so overly generous,” said Grothman. “My mission to reform welfare in America will also make immigrants think twice before coming to America if their only goal is to take our tax dollars for their benefit.”

The plan released by Grothman includes addressing the issue of children born to illegal immigrants being automatically granted United States citizenship.

“The idea that a child born to someone in this country illegally would automatically become a United States citizen is absurd,” said Grothman. “Diplomats’ children don’t become American citizens. Foreign tourists’ children born in America aren’t considered American. It’s long past-due for Congress to address this issue, and when I get to Washington, I’ll lead the charge to bring some common sense to the law.”

Grothman stressed that the changes he’s proposing wouldn’t affect the children of Americans or the children of lawful immigrants born in America.

Finally, Grothman said he’d hold the Obama Administration and all future administrations accountable for their actions on enforcing current law and he said he doesn’t support amnesty for illegal immigrants currently in the country.

“President Obama’s presidency has been marked by his repeated disregard for the law, and he and his entire administration must be held accountable to the law not his political whims,” said Grothman. “Above all, we cannot grant amnesty for those here illegally, and I’ll adamantly fight any attempts to do so.”
