Campaign Launches Petition to Congress: “Investigate Common Core”
(Oshkosh, WI) – State Sen. Glenn Grothman (R – Campbellsport), Republican candidate for Congress, highlighted his strong opposition to federal involvement in education today, including opposing the No Child Left Behind program in 2001 and more recently pushing to stop Common Core in Wisconsin.
“I’ve been working to stop Common Core and every component of it, like the intrusive student databases,” said Grothman. “When I get to Congress, voters can count on me to fight against more federal involvement in education – by Democrats or Republicans.”
In the Senate, Grothman was the sponsor of a bill to set new standards to replace Common Core, and he was the lead Senate sponsor of two other bills to protect student privacy under Common Core. In 2001, Grothman was an outspoken critic of the No Child Left Behind program that was being debated and passed at the time.
“The federal government has no business in our schools,” said Grothman. “I was one of the only conservatives to oppose the horrible No Child Left Behind program that was written by liberal Democrat Senator Ted Kennedy and passed by misguided Republicans. No Child Left Behind greatly expanded federal involvement in education with terrible results.”
“At a time when the federal government is borrowing 20% of its budget, there’s no reason for the feds to take our tax dollars only to send it back to us with strings attached and missing their hefty bureaucratic overhead,” added Grothman. “We don’t want – or need – federal bureaucrats determining our curriculum.”
Grothman pledged to investigate the Obama Administration’s role in implementing Common Core. It was recently reported that while the U.S. Department of Education poured $4 billion into Race to the Top grants that included implementing “common standards” as part of the selection factors, billionaire Bill Gates and his foundation spent over $200 million to “persuade” state education officials to adopt Common Core.
“It’s no coincidence that the Obama Administration and Bill Gates, who regularly donates to liberal Democrats like Nancy Pelosi, chose to push for nationalized common education standards at the exact same time,” said Grothman. “The American people deserve answers to how much they colluded to strong-arm the states into adopting Common Core. When I get to Congress, I’ll fight to find those answers.”
Grothman’s campaign launched a petition drive urging Congress to investigate the Department of Education’s role in formulating and implementing Common Core in collusion with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
“I urge concerned parents to sign our petition to Congress demanding they investigate the Department of Education’s collusion with Bill Gates to implement Common Core,” said Grothman. “Together, we will send a message to Washington that we won’t let them take over our education.”
