Joe Leibham’s Abysmal Record on Common Core, Student Privacy

(Oshkosh, WI) – Joe Leibham’s record on Common Core and protecting student privacy is abysmal says State Sen. Glenn Grothman, Republican candidate for Congress. In the legislature, Joe Leibham voted to spend millions of dollars implementing controversial student databases linked to Common Core and to allow the databases to be shared among a variety of government agencies.

“When it comes to opposing Common Core and all of its components, Joe Leibham is on the wrong side,” said Grothman. “Conservatives should be appalled that my opponent was the deciding vote to spend over $7 million and hire new state employees to implement these invasive databases.”

“These databases are inseparable from Common Core, and conservatives have been let down by Joe Leibham,” added Grothman. “His record on Common Core and student privacy is abysmal.”

The vote came in the legislature’s budget committee in January, and the motion to approve over $7 million and three new state employees to implement the databases passed 8-7 with Joe Leibham casting the deciding vote. Grothman led the conservative charge against it but fell one vote short.

In the 2013 state budget debate, Joe Leibham also voted to allow the student databases to share information with other government agencies to track children from their school years all the way into their adult lives.

“Parents should be appalled that Joe Leibham voted to allow their children to be tracked in multiple government databases from their first day of school through the rest of their lives,” said Grothman. “Privacy is a right that should be enjoyed by everyone, especially children, and it’s a shame that my opponent doesn’t respect that.”

Last week, Grothman launched a petition drive to urge Congress to investigate the Obama Administration’s involvement in the formulation and implementation of the standards. That petition can be found at www.glenngrothman.com/commoncore.

Grothman is a Republican candidate for Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District.  He currently represents the 20th Senate District in the Wisconsin State Senate.  The 6th Congressional District includes the counties of Ozaukee, Sheboygan, Fond du Lac, Winnebago, Dodge, Green Lake, Manitowoc, Marquette, Columbia, Waushara, and Milwaukee.
